HISTORY OF MALTEPE

The county, Maltepe is located in the north part of Istanbul which

surrounded with other counties Kadikoy in the north-east, Umraniye in the north, Kartal in the east and south and Marmara Sea in the west. Maltepe, which is about 52 kilometres, is one of Istanbul's new counties. There is no residency in the country of Maltepe but has 18 districts: Altaycesme, Altintepe, Aydinevler, Baglarbasi, Basibuyuk,

Buyukbakkalkoy, Cevizli, Cinar, Esenkent, Ferhat Pasa, Feyzullah, Findikli, Gulensu, Gulsuyu, Idealtepe, Kucukyali, Yali and Zumrutevler.

The coastal area between the Stream Camasirci (Bostanci) in the north and the stream, Dragos (Bulbul Stream) is flat. Towards east and north there are some gentle slopes while some parts are hilly in the centre and east. The stream, Camasirci and the stream, Dragos form boundaries naturally between the counties Kadikoy and Kartal.

The oldest recorded residency in the county (Maltepe) is Bryas which is supposed to have been located in the area between Maltepe and Cevizli according to the Byzantine's records. The earthquakes happened in the Byzantine time ruined Bryas a lot. Afterwards a new allocation unit and it was called Pelekanon. Kutalmisoglu Suleyman Sah advanced and conquered there in 1080s to reach The Bosphorus. Having an agreement with Byzantines, Suleyman Sah retreated after a while. According to this agreement, the stream, Dragos was the border between the Anatolian Selcuks and Byzantines. In 1090 this area reconquered. Pelekanon has an important value in Byzantine's history; The Sultan Orhan Ghazi and his troops who were marching towards west in 29 June 1329 started a war against Byzantine Emperor, Androkinos Paleologos III. in Pelekanon. Byzantine Emperor was wounded with his leg and rescued being kidnaping in a rug. After the Pelekanon War, The Turks started to settle down there according to an agreement.

There is no other recorded information about Maltepe. It is considered that Maltepe was named by a tumulus which was found in the county. The Turks use to say maltepe to the mound which was used to save treasure or other valuable things. Kazasker Feyzullah Efendi, who had a farm there, built a complex of buildings adjacent to a mosque in Maltepe in 1728, which means that 'maltepe' has been a residency for a long time and he had water brought from Kayisdagi Mountain. Only the fountain remained now. There are some remainings of churches in Maltepe where the Greek used to live until the Republic of Turkey.

After the republic had been decleared, the Greek had to immigrate to Greece. 1500 muslim immigrants who had come from Drama, Kavala and Salonika were settled where the greek used to live in Maltepe. There had been a big fire in the county in 1928 which destroyed the complex of buildings built by Feyzullah Efendi. The municipality was established in the same year in order to rebuilt the complex of buildings.

According to the local reconstruction plan, the residency would be the places around the railway. But it didn't work and in 1960 the settlement in Maltepe, including Kucukyali, developed rapidly towards east and north along the Ankara Asfalti, E – 5 motorway.

Kucukyali had 859 inhabitants in 1950 but in 1955 it was 1845 and 5071 in 1960, 12,888 in 1965. The municipality was established in rapidly developing Kucukyali in 1960. There had been places full of gardens, woods etc and coastal scenery and few houses in the country. Sureyya Ilmen built some resorts in Kucukyali coast where the stream Kucukyali flows into Marmara Sea. The resort which is called Sureyya Plaji was given as a name of the places around it and the railway station. Another establisment by Sureyya Ilmen is sanatorium which was built in the south of Basibuyuk. This medical establisment, sanatoryum used to call Narlidere Farmhouse, is now called Sureyya Pasa Sanatorium. The sanatorium has specialists of chesty problems who come from different hospitals and a nursery school.

The municipalities of Maltepe and Kucukyali were included by the metropolitan municipality in 1981. The inhabitants of Maltepe was 90,439 in 1980 except Kucukyali. Including Baglarbasi with 29,890, Feyzullah Mahallesi with 14,713Yali Mahallesi with 12,183 Maltepe had 56,786 people in 1990.

The rapid development of the suburbs of Ankara Asfalti which were built as slum houses resulted in that Maltepe has become a county as many others in Istanbul. The slum areas which were squated in Basibuyuk, Gulsuyu, Gulensu along the road D-100 which used to be called E-5 and Ankara Asfalti in the east and north developed rapidly. In these areas some districts, as Aydinevler, Zumrutevler and Esenkent were established too. Buyukbakkalkoy, which has military zones in the south, was also developed and lost its rural scenery. Due to the rapid development, a lot of wood and rural parts of Maltepe were ruined. There started administraional problems on account of the speedy development in 1990s. Thus Maltepe were seperated from the county Kartal in 1992 and became a county borough officially.

Some of the people who reside in Maltepe work in Maltepe while many commute to other parts of Asian and European sides of Istanbul. They get their works and homes by trains, cars and buses. Train is an important tranporting vehicle for those who get their works and homes.

There are three main land routes in Maltepe: D-100 which passes through Maltepe from southeast and northwest. There are many residencies on both sides of this route. The other one is Cetin Emec Boulevard which goes along the seaside including a cycle track. After this boulevard, swimming is impossible now. And the third route is Bagdat Street which is also called 'minibus way'. Anatolia Route, which is connected to Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (crossing Bosphorus), passes near Buyukbakkalkoy in the north.

The number of the inhabitants of Maltape, in 1990, is 266,094. According to some sources, in 1994, it is supposed to be about 700,000 poeple. The people are workers, tradesmen and officers in Maltape which is also an industiral area.
